The devastation from Hurricane Helene continues to affect communities in western North Carolina, but there is good news for our primary partner, Montmorenci UMC in Candler, just outside of Asheville. After nearly four weeks, most of the community finally has water! Though still unpotable and often murky brown, the water allows residents to flush toilets and take showers.

Montmorenci UMC serves one of the poorest areas in Buncombe County and provides critical aid through its food pantry, serving more than 150 families each week. Thanks to your incredible generosity, our congregation has contributed more than $125,000 to our Disaster Aid fund to continue meeting these urgent needs.

As disaster response moves from emergency relief to the rebuilding phase, the church’s generous contributions are allowing us to respond quickly to the needs our partners lift up. Monetary donations allow us to act swiftly and meet specific needs as they arise. Your contributions enable us to purchase urgently needed supplies without delay and respond directly to requests from Montmorenci UMC and their community.

Upcoming Service Projects 

• Our children’s Sunday School classes will make 60 spiritual care kits for children at Montmorenci’s food pantry and church. These kits are designed to help children process trauma and will include a small lovie, prayer prompts, an electric candle, and other helpful items.

• Continued work on shower trailers in collaboration with Appalachian Service Project.

• A young adult group is headed to Asheville in November to assist with recovery efforts.
