UMAR empowers adults with intellectual and develo p.m.ental disabilities across western North Carolina. Founded in 1983, UMAR’s mission is to promote community inclusion, independence and growth for people with intellectual and develo p.m.ental disabilities through residential, employment, and cultural enrichment opportunities. UMAR is both a nonprofit agency and a ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Their 24 group homes, 9 apartments, 2 art centers, and day progr amming allow individuals to experience independent living in a home-like atmosphere. UMAR provides skills assessment, one-on-one job coaches, and training to help job-seekers find meaningful employment in the community. Once employed, the agency provides continued long-term support to help persons maintain employment.
