For the Love of Literacy
In May, we completed our first year of For the Love of Literacy (FTLOL) at Druid Hills Academy. FTLOL is a program created in direct partnership with the school and its Literacy Coach, Ms. Moore. Our mission is to provide students with a consistent, supportive presence, build meaningful relationships, and help strengthen their literacy skills for a brighter future.
From October to May, volunteers from MPUMC met with students weekly, forming connections and celebrating their growth throughout the school year. Ms. Moore reported that every student demonstrated measurable growth, with improved test scores from the beginning of the year to the present.
Below is an excerpt from her email:
First, I want to take the time to say thank you for everything you have done for me, our school, and our scholars this year. You truly do not realize the impact you made on our students. Just seeing your faces each week, receiving those little hugs, and knowing you were coming became something they genuinely looked forward to. Unfortunately, for some of our students, that consistency and encouragement may not always come from home, which made your presence even more meaningful.
You all even made a difference in attendance here at Druid Hills. The students knew the days you were coming, and they made sure they were at school on those days. That was HUGE! Your consistency, care, and commitment motivated our scholars in ways words cannot fully express.
Please know how grateful we are for each of you. I pray that you all will continue to support us, even with new leadership coming in next year. It is very important to us that we continue this partnership because of the tremendous difference you have made in the lives of our students.
