Sunday School
With an average attendance of 300 children and adult leaders each week, Sunday School is our largest ongoing ministry. Children ages two-fifth grade are assigned to classes based on their school age and remain in that class from August to June. Classes are led by a te am of leaders who follow a curriculum that offers opportunities to be engaged in learning Bible stories, exploring questions, and participating in worship rituals. Sunday School is 9:45-10:45 am
Sunday School runs through the school year (approximately end of August-early June) and takes a break during the summer months. There are also occasional F amily Worship Days throughout the year. On F amily Worship Days, Sunday School does not meet. Check back for the 2019-2020 Sunday School year calendar.
Registration
Please register for Sunday School to have your child assigned to a classroom. If you are visiting or are not registered for Sunday School, visit our welcome table to find out your child’s classroom number.
Curriculum
Preschool (Twos, Threes, and Pre-Kindergarten)
Preschoolers enjoy activities and stories that help even very young children learn that God loves them, they can depend on God, Jesus is their friend, and church is a place where they grow and develop in their Christian faith.
Lower Elementary (Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade)
Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade follow the Godly Play Curriculum. Godly Play is a unique form of Christian education that allows children to discover the meanings and mysteries of faith for themselves. Playful orthodoxy is the approach of this progr am. Lessons provide opportunity for children to explore the mystery of God’s presence in our lives, to hear God’s invitation for spiritual experience, to listen to what God is saying and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in our lives (from www.godlyplayfoundation.org).
Upper Elementary (Third Grade, Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade)
Each grade has one Sunday School class so everyone can bond together as peer relationships become a priority. Third graders dive into Third Grade Bible Academy, a curriculum designed specifically to help them become f amiliar with the “mechanics” of their new Bibles, which they receive in the fall. Through g ames, activities, and worship, they explore this sacred text. The curriculum for fourth and fifth graders incorporates te am-building and g ames to make our faith stories come alive.
Music
Each month, kindergarten-fifth graders gather in Jubilee Hall during the Sunday School hour for Elementary Worship.
Nursery Care
Nursery child care is provided for infants (at least eight weeks old) and toddlers from 8:15 am to 12:15 p.m. Our mission is to provide a safe, loving environment for children while parents participate in Sunday School and/or one of our four worship services. The nursery is staffed by paid workers who have been carefully screened and interviewed by Children’s Ministries staff. No reservations or registration is necessary.
Rooms are open for drop-off 15 minutes before a worship service starts and will close 15 minutes following the conclusion of a worship service.
- Room 156: (Infant/Crawler Room) Children who are eight weeks old through those who are just beginning to walk
- Room 154 and Room 158: (Toddler Room) Children who have started walking steadily through children who are not yet eligible for the Two-Year-Old Sunday School class. (Current Two-Year-Olds were born between September 1, 2015-August 31, 2016.* Beginning August 25, 2019, Two-Year-Olds will be children born between September 1, 2016-August 31, 2017.)
*We follow the cut-off dates used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
If you use Nursery Care, you must check in your child either at our Welcome Table or at the automated check-in kiosks in the children’s lobby. Place the adhesive n ametag on your child’s back and keep the unique matching tag, which you must present to pick up your child. Parents of infants and toddlers can take a pager in exchange for their car keys, which we can use to notify you if you need to return to the nursery.
Please bring all clearly labeled necessary supplies (diaper bag, bottle, cups) for your child. Please communicate any instructions or anticipated needs to the child care staff on duty.
For the security of all our children, please do not enter or open the doors to the nursery room (or allow your other children to do so) when dropping of your child. We will accept children and belongings at the door or open the door to allow children to walk in.
You must remain on the church c ampus while your children in nursery care.
