Throughout his writings, Thomas Merton characterizes contemplative living as living in true relationship with oneself, God, others and nature. Contemplative life employs silence, solitude, reflection, meditation, prayer and other spiritual practices as a way of opening to and growing deeper in these relationships and the responsibility and action they require of us. Here at Myers Park UMC we offer practices to help you grow deeper in the contemplative life.
Labyrinth
We offer the only permanent indoor labyrinth in Charlotte within our newly restored Francis Chapel. Symbolizing our spiritual journey and used as a spiritual tool of prayer and meditation, the labyrinth consists of a single pathway leading both inward and outward again, with a large center space in the midst of the circuitous turns. There are many ways to walk the labyrinth, as an individual or part of a group experience, but there is no one right way to do so. Using guided devotions, selected scripture, stations of the cross and other spiritual resources may be helpful at times.
The Labyrinth is typically scheduled to be open for walking on the second week of each month, however, funeral and memorial services as well as certain ongoing progr ams may cause change in scheduling. View this page or call the church reception desk at 704-376-8584 for confirmation of dates and times before you come to walk!

Centering Prayer
Centering Prayer is a method of prayer which prepares us to receive the gift of God’s presence, traditionally called contemplative prayer. Centering prayer facilitates the movement from more active prayer – verbal, mental or affective prayer – into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Join ongoing sessions of Centering Prayer where you can learn the practice and experience it in a leader-led small group setting.
