Advent at Myers Park United Methodist Church

Throughout Advent:

Why Christmas Still Matters: Remembering and Preparing for Advent,Mondays, December 2, December 9, December 16, and December 23, 11:00 am-12:00 p.m., room 106: Join Rev. Uiyeon Kim as we prayerfully ex amine the most amazing moment in history! We will follow the footsteps of Mary, Joseph, and others. And we will share life journeys in light of the hope and new life gained with Jesus. No registration or book study required. Come as you are able.

Angel Tree: Working with Prison Fellowship Ministry, MPUMC will have an Angel Tree with n ames and ages of local children whose parents are currently incarcerated. Stop by the tree (located in the lobby of the Parish Life building)starting November 25 to pick up your angel. If you’re interested in volunteering with this ministry or have questions,contact Doug Caldwell at dougcaldwell@bellsouth.net.

Room in the Inn: Every Thursday and Friday night from December 1 through March 31, we open our doors and hearts to provide warm meals, warm beds, and warm fellowship for homeless neighbors. In total, we will host more than 400 of our neighbors that might not otherwise have someplace to stay. There are various opportunities for individuals,f amilies, and groups to participate, such as driving the van, preparing and serving a meal, and staying overnight with our guests. Week 1:

12/01: Youth Advent Night, 5:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m.: All youth will gather in Jubilee Hall for a night of celebration together.

12/02: Service of Hope and Consolation, 6:30 p.m., Francis Chapel: Each holiday season, we welcome the bereaved to our Service of Hope and Consolation, praying that the music, words, and candlelight comfort those for whom Thanksgiving and Christmas can be painful.

12/05-12/07: Youth Christmas Tree Lot Open: Come pick up or buy your tree or your wreath. Lot hours are Thursday,December 5, 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 6, 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. (F amily fun night with Hubee D’sFood truck), and Saturday, December 7, 9:00 am-12:00 p.m

12/07-12/08: Jubilee Store: Help parents in Charlotte F amily Housing’s progr ams create a special Christmas for their children. Pick up a gift tag from one of our trees around the church. Or sign up to serve with these f amilies (as an inventory worker, shopping assistant, giftwrapper, greeter, or childcare worker) on December 7 and 8. Week 2:

12/08: Kneeling at the Manger, 4:00 p.m., Jubilee Hall: During this service of story and song, a narrator reads thestory of Christ’s birth and children of any age are invited to come forward dressed as their favorite Nativitycharacter. The Children’s Choirs will sing.

Week 3: 

12/15: Christmas Concerts: 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., First United Methodist Church, 1501 N. Tryon St.:Join us for either of our two concerts. The 150-voice chorus, composed of our adult, youth, and children’s ensembles, will join with a full orchestra featuring our own Myers Park Strings and Myers Park Bells to ring in this season. Free event and free parking. ASL interpretation will be available during the 4:00 p.m. service. Shuttle service from MPUMC will also be available starting at 2:30 p.m. No tickets required.

Week 4: 

12/22: F amily Worship, 8:30 am, 9:45 am, and 11:00 am, Sanctuary:No Sunday School for children. Worship caref or eight weeks old through those not yet in kindergarten will be available.

12/22: Love Feast, 6:00 p.m., Sanctuary:A special service hosted by Myers Park United Methodist Church Youth Ministry. Join us for a f amily friendly traditional Love Feast with Moravian Love Feast Buns, Spiced Tea, and handmade Beeswax Candles.

12/22: A Service of Lessons and Carols, 8:30 am, 9:45 am, and 11:00 am,Sanctuary, 8:45 am, Jubilee Hall:Joinus for these special services. Lessons and Carols, a service featuring our Chancel Choir, Ch amber Singers, andda Capo Brass will take place during all Sanctuary services. Church in the Round will feature Christmas in Wordand Song, which will include Scripture readings, music, and visual art.
